Inspired by wmtriallawyer's post, I too would like to ask for advice from the dKos community, particularly the attorneys (and I KNOW there are a lot of you!). I realize that it may be out of the range of strictly political commentary, so I apologize in advance. But I have two important questions:
I am currently applying to law school (I'm 24). The reasons are many, but mostly I feel a drive toward social justice, and I believe becoming an attorney will, at the very least, lay a foundation from which I can strive for such a thing. Question One:
Is this total BS? How likely is it that I can end up doing something "good" with a law degree?
The firm I work for now as a paralegal is god awful, by the way.
On to the next question: I most likely have the opportunity to go the very top law schools. However, I'm not interested in corporate law, etc. So I think I may go to a school that's less prestigious, but I can probably go to for free or very cheaply with the scholarships they offer.
Is this a good idea? How important is a top school to your career, if you are interested in progressive causes and social justice?
Again, sorry for the off-topic nature of the post.
